Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta 2026: Balloons, Green Chile & New Mexico Pride
The air is crisp. The chile is roasting. The balloons are here.
It's still dark when Albuquerque starts moving. Coffee in one hand, a foil-wrapped breakfast burrito in the other, thousands of us shuffle onto the field in jackets we'll be peeling off by mid-morning. Then a burner roars, a balloon glows like a lantern against the black sky, and everybody goes quiet for a second. That's the magic of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, and right now, it's happening all around us.
Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta 2026: Nine Days of Color
The 54th Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta runs October 3–11, 2026, at Balloon Fiesta Park, and it's still the world's largest gathering of hot air balloons. It began in 1972 with just 13 balloons at the original launch site at Coronado Mall.
The heart of it all is the Mass Ascension. Weather permitting, balloons begin launching at about 7:00 a.m. on mass ascension days, rising in two waves until the whole sky looks like someone tipped over a box of crayons. Before that, Dawn Patrol pilots lift off in the dark, glowing like stars that decided to come closer. Add the Special Shape Rodeo, the evening Balloon Glows, and the Night Magic Glow on Saturday, October 10, and you can see why New Mexicans plan their whole October around it.
Heading out this weekend? Check the official Balloon Fiesta website for the latest schedule and weather updates. Balloons fly only when the weather says yes.
Hot Air Balloons in Albuquerque, Framed by the Sandias
As the sun comes up, the Sandia Mountains turn gold, then pink. (Sandía means watermelon, and at sunset you'll understand why.) Below them, hundreds of balloons drift over the Rio Grande valley in every color you can imagine. You hear the whoosh of the burners, kids shouting "Look, look, LOOK!", and somebody's abuela telling the same story she tells every year.
And it isn't only at the park. Balloon Fiesta, New Mexico style, happens everywhere. Neighbors step out in their pajamas to watch balloons float over the rooftops. Drivers slow down on the interstate. Albuquerque is proud of this event, and it shows.
Green Chile in the Air and Friends from Everywhere
October in Albuquerque smells like roasting chile. That smoky, sweet, slightly charred perfume is basically our official welcome mat. Visitors arrive from across the country and around the world, and many of them get their first real taste of authentic New Mexico food this week: red or green (or "Christmas"), sopaipillas, green chile on absolutely everything.
Balloon Fiesta isn't just something to look at. It's a table where everyone's invited.
Chips and Salsa for Your Balloon Fiesta Watch Party
Gilly Loco is a New Mexico family company, and our salsas and Hatch chile sauces are proudly made right here in New Mexico, with the same bold flavors you'll smell drifting across Balloon Fiesta Park. Whether you're hosting a watch party, feeding visiting family, stocking a vacation rental, or grabbing snacks for the hotel room after a 4 a.m. wake-up call, here's how we'd set the table:
- Salsa Roja: a rich, toasty Hatch chile salsa made with authentic Hatch red chiles from New Mexico's Hatch Valley.
- Green Chile Ghost Pepper Salsa: fire-roasted Hatch green chile meets real ghost pepper heat, for the brave ones in your group.
- Traditional Salsa: the recipe that started Gilly Loco and a crowd-pleaser for every table.
Then add the crunch. Our seed oil free tortilla chips are made with stone ground corn and finished with sea salt. They're tortilla chips cooked in 100% coconut oil, just five simple ingredients. Thin, crispy, and sturdy enough for a serious scoop. Try the Blue Corn Tortilla Chips, stone ground from Ute Mountain blue corn, for a deep, nutty flavor that looks gorgeous on a party platter.
Hosting a crowd? The LOCO Party Pack lets you pick a chip 4-pack and any three Gilly Loco salsas, so you can have a whole watch party in one box.
Take Home a Taste of New Mexico
The balloons eventually come down, but the flavor doesn't have to end. Looking for New Mexico-made products to bring home? Skip the suitcase stress and have a box of New Mexico salsa waiting on your doorstep. Our Pick Three lets you choose any three Gilly Loco salsas and Hatch chile sauces. It's also a great thank-you for whoever watched your dog while you chased balloons.
